Sunday 14th September 2008, Worcester University
This was the first WA competition after the summer break, and brought together teams from Birmingham Flames, Border Counties, Chelmsley Wood, City of Stoke, City of Worcester, Earls, East Staffs, Hereford Sparks, Idsall, Newport, Park Wrekin, Rebound, Tamworth and Wolverhampton. In this competition each gymnast competes just one apparatus for the whole team, putting pressure on everyone to produce their best performance possible. Needless to say there were some spills and thrills, and we were treated to excellence from Nicole (Park Wrekin) who produced top-draw skills in her bar routine (Tkatchev and double straight dismount to name but 2 moves). Judges were also put through their paces, scoring routines against a new set of rules which were published over the summer, causing the event to over-run by half an hour - for which the organisers apologise but feel was unavoidable in the circumstances.
Park Wrekin took home 5 out of the 6 trophies, leaving just one trophy for everyone else - Tamworth took this trophy in the level 3 competition. Well done Park and Tamworth, that was an excellent start to the Autumn season for you!
The WTC would like to thank East Staffs and the City of Worcester for hosting the event, especially to Steve who ‘volunteered' to be the compere for the day. The university venue acoustics are not great, but Steve did an excellent job for us. Also our thanks to Helen Williamson who has made us some medal cushions so that we have more formal medal presentations for gymnasts, and finally our thanks to all of our judges for their time and expertise.
See you all at the Regional Championships in Perry Barr in a few weeks time - don't forget to get your regional affiliation fees in (if your club hasn't already, and don't forget to get your entries for the level 5 competition in by the end of this week!)
